04 Feb Channeling Your Inner Wild Photo Shoot | Q&A with Kaytlyn Perez Photography

Be bold, be fearless, be creative, be wild. This is our mantra and how we strive to live. However, if we’re honest, most days it’s a fake it till we make it situation. Last month we dug down deep and channeled our inner wild when we got the opportunity to collaborate with Kaytlyn Perez Photography and VERT beauty on this Channeling Your Inner Wild photoshoot. The result was such an empowering experience that we decided to do a little Q&A with the photographer behind the shoot to get a glimpse into her imagination, find out what inspired her to create such a photo session, and how an everyday woman (who might not be a full-time model) could tap into their own inner wild and capture moments like these. Plus a little gift at the end for B+B readers…
B+B: So what inspired you to create a shoot like this?
KP: So when I initially started my dreaming of this collaboration with Barb we wanted to create a boho vibe/theme. However, I was personally inspired to capture the raw and wild side of a woman so the creative morphed into this as we went along. We didn’t decide on the location until the day of and arrived with only 25 minutes of sunlight left and almost ran out of gas on the way there. My shoots typically don’t go his way but it was exactly what I expected with my model. She’s adventurous, fun and accepting off all things. Sometimes the imperfect and unplanned is what brings out the most authentic and captivating images.
B+B: How do you get your model subjects to loosen up? Are there any tips you suggest for those that are not used to being in front of the camera, to get the most natural and not “I’m so uncomfortble with this I’m cringing inside” look?
KP: I always spend time getting to know my girls, asking questions allows me to also open up to them. It’s important that we connect and they have a sense of trust so they are able to feel free and embrace the REAL version of themselves. Also music of course! I always ask for their favorite artist and play tunes throughout 🙂
B+B: Is there such a thing as a good side? If so, how does one find it if they don’t know?
KP: So according to a scientific study, everyone, it seems, agrees that left is best. But in my opinion, when it comes to posing – keep it real. In my sessions, I always tend to make them adventurous because that’s what makes you beautiful. Out in the mountains skipping around in a summer dress or walking through the city blacked out in your leather jacket… now that’s the best side, the real side.
B+B: What time of day do you suggest going on a shoot like this to find your inner wild?
KP: Sunrise and Sunsets are always where it’s at. But midday allows a lot of room for creativity too. It’s really all up to who I am working with.
B+B: Do you think shoots like this are important for helping women find confidence? If yes, what leads you to believe this?
KP: YES! YES! YES! There is something about picking out an outfit you feel good in, watching the curls fall from your iron and running your favorite color across your lips then, walking out your front door. I have found that photos pause and highlight the very details women forget about themselves that make them so beautiful. Confidence does take work but that’s the beauty of it, having a picture that you can look back on and take yourself back to that place is so healing. It’s so important to set time apart for yourself!
