Indulgence, peace and quiet, stunning scenery and romance… the key ingredients for the perfect honeymoon. There aren’t many places in the world that offer them all, but the beautiful island of Grenada in the Caribbean has it all, and in abundance!
Known as the ‘Spice Island’, Grenada is nestled in the southern end of the Caribbean archipelago, and is in good company being surrounded by islands such as Trinidad and Tobago, St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados. Her neighboring isles are beautiful in their own right, but Grenada offers a more exclusive and stylish experience, which is just what you want for a honeymoon.
Natural beauty
Grenada is actually made up of three islands; Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. In comparison to the majority of the Caribbean islands they remain relatively ‘off the radar’, meaning they weren’t overdeveloped in the mass tourism boom which swept over the Caribbean in the 1970’s. The Grenadian islands have retained their original beauty and charm and have protected themselves from over development.
Hearing that Grenada has on the whole stayed clear of mass tourism you may think it must be difficult to access the island, but you would be wrong. Grenada’s international airport, Maurice Bishop airport, offers direct flights to Miami, Toronto, New York and London, as well as connecting flights to many other Caribbean islands.
The island is also very accessible by sea. Grenada’s main town, the 300-year old St George’s, is also a beautiful port which welcomes cruise ships. This provides a ‘cruise and stay’ option for your honeymoon. Spend time aboard a cruise ship sampling what the other Caribbean islands have to offer, and then leave the ship in Grenada for a peaceful and indulgent end to your trip.
Beach life
A honeymoon spent on Grenada has so much to offer. The island’s coastline is made up of breathtaking beaches of white sand lapped by emerald blue water. The most famous, Grande Anse, is on the western, leeward side of the island, sheltered from the waves, currents and winds. The two miles of soft white sand is bordered by some of the island’s most prestigious and luxurious hotels, and grand houses. The ideal base for a honeymoon.
The most unique is Mount Cinnamon Hotel. Located at the peaceful southern end of the beach, the hotel boasts 22 stunning luxury villas which climb up the lush hillside behind the beach, offering uninterrupted and breathtaking views over the beach, and across the bay to St George’s. The views are stunning during the day, and come to life at night with the twinkling lights around the bay, the perfect backdrop for a romantic drink on the balcony. Grenada’s heart
If you fancy a day away from the beach there is plenty on offer. The heart of Grenada, in both location and soul, is the island’s rainforest. The center of the island is made up of dense rainforest containing magnificent waterfalls and amazing wildlife including tropical birds, lizards, monkeys, rare orchids and endangered frogs. The Grenadians have done a magnificent job of protecting their rainforest, which is now a national park. If you would like to explore the rainforest you can either hire a car on your own for a more private experience, or join one of the guided tours and learn from the very knowledgeable guides.
Underwater beauty
If you are feeling really adventurous then Grenada’s underwater sculpture park will be a honeymoon experience you won’t forget! Located in Mollinere Bay, just a five minute boat ride from St George’s, British artist Jason de Caires Taylor, has anchored sixty-five underwater sculptures to the sea bed. The site provides a peaceful and magical snorkeling or scuba diving experience. If you get there early you may find you are the only people there, exploring the sculptures together.
